The Coastal Redwood is the world's tallest tree species. These California natives can grow to over 350’,exceeding the height of the tallest building in downtown Colorado Springs. Redwoods are long-lived, with some reaching 2,200 years old. Redwood trees are very resilient. Mature trees are naturally resistant to fire, due to their 12“ thick bark and lack of flammable resin. Bitter, chemical compounds in the wood, called tannins, keep both insects and diseases from killing the trees.
Old-growth redwood forest once covered more than 2 million acres in California and Oregon. The beautiful wood and natural resistance to fire and decay of this species, however, make it very valuable timber. The California Gold Rush of 1840’s brought extensive logging of redwoods to build San Francisco and surrounding cities. Just 4% -5% of the original old-growth forest remains today, most of them in the Redwood National and State Parks.
Redwood stumps can be utilized in many ways to enhance the beauty of your residence and business. Due to their natural ability to withstand the elements, they make excellent choices for water features. Other types of wood will decay and rot at an accelerated rate, while Redwood will persevere and last for years and years to come.
